Chapter Six
A loud bang woke Warren from an uneasy sleep. He rolled over, confused, then froze when he heard footsteps in the hallway outside the apartment. Shit. Not good. The neighbors aren’t supposed to be home until next week. He glanced at the window. It was still dark out, but the faint chirps of songbirds told him that dawn wasn’t far off. Not that it matters what flipping time it is. His instincts screamed at him: danger, danger. For the first time in his life, Warren wished he owned a shotgun.
“Warren? What was that?” Liz asked, poking her bony elbow into his ribs. “Stop waking me up when I’m trying to sleep,” she mumbled.
“Hang on.” Warren strained to hear. Something shuffled outside the apartment door. He tensed, and then shoved his sister to the floor with one quick motion, ignoring her squeak of protest. “Shh! And stay down there!”
“What? Warren, what’s going on?” she asked, but then the door banged open and three men rushed in, knives catching the faint light of the streetlamp outside the building.
“Fuck.” Warren stood up, shaking off his grogginess. He met the first man’s arm before the guy could do anything with his blade. Warren grabbed the wrist and twisted viciously, breaking bones. He kicked at the man’s head as he went down, just to be sure he wouldn’t get up again. The man screamed, but Warren didn’t have time to care. The second intruder was already slashing at him. He ducked, hoping to God Liz had the sense to stay out of sight. Her scream told him, not so much.
“Die, you little asshole,” the second man said, stabbing up under Warren’s elbow.
The blade hit Warren’s ribs and glanced off, but it fucking hurt. He staggered, but managed not to fall. He glanced down to see his sister being dragged across the floor by none other than her bastard ex, Mick Barstone.
“Fuck!” He grabbed the man who’d knifed and pushed hard, shoving until the guy fell over the coffee table, breaking the glass top into shards. The guy didn’t stay down, dammit. “Do you do everything Mick tells you? Where the hell do you get off breaking in here, into my home?” Rage gave Warren strength as he fended off several more slashes with the knife.
“You’re gonna die, fucker. And your sister is going to be our bitch.” The man slashed again. “You don’t mess with the Hawks in this town, not if you want to live. Mick says your bitch sister is his mate.”
Hawks? Warren hoped the guy didn’t mean they were shifters, too, although the reference to a mate suggested it. Shifters or not, I’ll be damned if I let these assholes claim my sister. Over my dead body. He blocked another hit and punched the guy in the gut. The man wheezed, staggering back, but he recovered almost instantly. Warren grabbed a book from the table and threw it at him. Blood slicked his hands, ruining his aim. “I don’t care if you’re a fucking snake.
